Slotting machine is a reciprocating device tool in which, a ram handling the tool reciprocates in a vertical axis and the cutting by tool is performed during the downward hit. The machine tool removes any unnecessary material chips from the workpiece to produce splines, grooves and other tools.

If a number of bodies are assembled in such a way that the motion of one causes the constrained predictable motion to the others, it is known as mechanism.

Types of Kinematic chain

  • Four Bar Chain or Quadric cyclic chain.
  • Single Slider crank chain.
  • Double slider crank chain.
When one of the links is fixed in a kinematic chain it is called a mechanism.

Inversion of Mechanisms.

The method of obtaining different mechanisms by fixing different links of a kinematic chain is known as inversion of the mechanism.
The number of mechanisms that can be obtained will be equal to number of links in the kinematic chain.

Inversion of four bar chain

  1. Beam Engine (Crank and lever mechanism)
  2. Coupling rod of a locomotive (Double Crank Mechanism)
  3. Watt’s Indicator mechanism (Double lever mechanism)

Inversion Slider Crank Mechanism

  1. Pendulum pump (Bull engine)

  3. Rotary internal combustion engine (Gnome Engine)

In this mechanism link corresponding to the connecting rod (AC) is fixed. The crank CB (in the fig below) revolves about the fixed center C. A slider attached to the crank pin at B slides along the slotted lever AP. This makes the slotted lever oscillate about the pivoted point A
A short link PQ transmits the motion from AP to the arm which reciprocates with the tool along the line of stroke.
We see that the angle β made by the forward or cutting stroke is greater than the angle α described by the return stroke. Hence the name quick return mechanism...
